The Graduate Academic Certificate (GAC) in Advanced Manufacturing helps students gain knowledge to design and implement innovative uses of advanced manufacturing technologies and processes, including automation, digital tools, design, control, and 3D printing, across the product life cycle. The Advanced Manufacturing GAC is interdisciplinary, allowing students to take courses from multiple departments within the College of Engineering, including Materials Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering.

UNT has invested in and received funding for our excellent advanced manufacturing facilities, including the Center for Agile and Adaptive Additive Manufacturing (CAAAM) and the Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Processes Institute (AMMPI). The Advanced Manufacturing GAC gives students the opportunity to work and learn alongside outstanding researchers in world-class facilities created specifically for advanced manufacturing.

What to Expect

Students can expect to take 12 hours of required courses that will provide a solid foundation in advanced manufacturing.
Students who graduate from this program will be able to:

  • Select nontraditional and advanced manufacturing processes and technologies
  • Assess the capabilities and limitations of different modern manufacturing processes
  • Assess and present about the production process on the basis of knowledge, developments, and failure in manufacturing products
  • Gain a working knowledge of metal and polymer advanced manufacturing technologies
  • Apply control engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors.

Course Offerings

  • Required courses | 12 hours
    • MTSE 5640: Additive Manufacturing Processes and Materials Science Fundamentals
    • MSET 5100: Advanced Manufacturing Technologies
    • MEEN 5800.007: Robotics and Automation
    • EENG 5310: Control Systems Design

Choose Your Career Path

Students in this certificate program gain practical skills that are important to employers, including new product development, continuous improvement processes, automation, product management, product quality assurance, and manufacturing processes. Additionally, students will gain common marketable skills related to innovation and problem solving. The combination of these hard and soft skills helps prepare students for jobs in industry.

Current in-demand jobs in advanced manufacturing include manufacturing engineer, project engineer, and leadership roles in manufacturing/production management. Those with knowledge of advanced manufacturing can work in many different manufacturing and production fields.

Marketable Skills

  1. Develop process plans for manufacturing
  2. Conduct independent investigations of technologies
  3. Understand the foundations of embedded systems
  4. Problem solve for manufacturing needs
  5. Learn to innovate manufacturing technologies

Admissions

Our program is open to students from engineering, computer science, math, and science-related backgrounds. Experience or education in manufacturing is a plus. Each applicant's transcripts will be reviewed to determine if their background is suitable for admission into the program and/or if leveling coursework is required. If leveling coursework is needed, students may be required to take undergraduate leveling courses to prepare for coursework in the program.

To be admitted, students should:

  • Have a bachelor's degree in a STEM discipline from an accredited college or university
  • Have a 2.8 or higher bachelor's degree GPA
  • Have a 79 or higher on TOEFL, a 6.0 or higher on IELTS, or otherwise meet the university requirements for English language proficiency (if international)
  • Provide a resume to reflect educational and career experience in manufacturing, research, etc. (optional)
