NSF Safety, Security, and Privacy of Open-Source Ecosystems (Safe-OSE) program

The NSF Safety, Security, and Privacy of Open-Source Ecosystems (Safe-OSE) program (NSF 24-608) aims to tackle vulnerabilities in open-source ecosystems (OSEs), both software and non-software, that could be exploited to compromise users and their operations.

Program Overview

  • Objective: Enhance the safety, security, and privacy of OSEs.
  • Focus Areas:
  • Technical vulnerabilities (e.g., code flaws)
  • Socio-technical challenges (e.g., supply chain risks, insider threats)

This program differs from NSF's Dear Colleague Letter on open-source software security (NSF 23-149), which focuses on fundamental cybersecurity research. Instead, Safe-OSE emphasizes proactive measures in existing, mature OSEs. Eligible proposals can cover a diverse range of OSEs, including software, scientific methodologies, manufacturing processes, and more.

Award Information

  • Funding Amount: $15,000,000 total for 10 awards
  • Budget: Up to $500,000 for Year 1 and up to $1,000,000 for Year 2 (total up to $1,500,000 per award)
