Biography

Dr. Jiho Lee is an Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of North Texas, where he leads the Advanced Smart Manufacturing Lab (ASML). His research focuses on AI-driven smart manufacturing, with an emphasis on Physics-informed AI, Industrial IoT-based monitoring, autonomous robotics, and digital twins. Prior to joining UNT, he served as a Research Scientist and Postdoctoral Researcher at Purdue University, where he coordinated global industry-academic consortia and advanced collaborative research initiatives. He holds both a Ph.D. and B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Sungkyunkwan University, South Korea. For over a decade, Dr. Lee has dedicated his research to advancing manufacturing systems through fundamental methodologies and real-world applications. In addition to his research, he has developed practical AI/ML education materials tailored for mechanical engineers, teaching students and industry professionals in both Korea and the United States.

Research

Dr. Jiho Lee's research group, Advanced Smart Manufacturing Lab (ASML), focuses on advanced smart manufacturing technologies including:

  • Physics-informed and explainable AI for real-time process/machine monitoring
  • Robotic autonomous systems for manufacturing processes and tasks
  • Immersive and interactive digital twin-based cyber-physical systems (CPS)
  • Generative AI applications in human-centric smart manufacturing
