The UNT College of Engineering has named Vijay K. Vasudevan chair of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. His appointment begins Sept. 1, 2021.
Vasudevan joins the college from the University of Cincinnati where he is the Herman Schneider Professor of Materials Science and Engineering in the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering. He is a Fellow of the American Society for Materials.
"I feel honored and privileged to be selected to serve as the chair of the MTSE department at UNT. I am excited about joining UNT and look forward to working with my colleagues and Dean Hanchen Huang in advancing the mission of the department and the College of Engineering," said Vasudevan.
Vasudevan’s research focuses on metallurgy, phase transformations, electron microscopy, additive manufacturing, advanced mechanical surface treatments, creep, fatigue, corrosion, stress corrosion cracking and nanoscale materials. His research has been supported by more than $17 million in funding from various agencies, including the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, National Science Foundation, Department of Energy, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Idaho National Laboratory, EPRI and industry, amongst others.
As an educator, he has advised 29 M.S. and 18 doctoral students as well as 10 postdoctoral research scholars.
"Our Department of Materials Science and Engineering is one of the best in the nation. Now the department has one of the best scholars as its chair. I’m excited to work with Dr. Vasudevan to take the department to the next height," said Dean Hanchen Huang.
Vasudevan received his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. He has published one book and 193 peer-reviewed articles in prominent journals and conference proceedings, and holds two patents.
