Periodic structures based phononic crystal can be designed to realize acoustic metamaterials for the ultrasonic frequency. The propagation of sound through these periodic structures can be modified by engineering the mechanical properties of the materials that make up these periodic structures. These metamaterial structures have been configured to develop acoustic filters, lens and switches and logic circuits. The ultrasonic metamaterials developed in our group was also converted into active phononic devices by using radio-frequency susceptible polymers. Radio-frequency waves can be used to modulate ultrasonic waves using hybrid phononic crystal based acoustic filters. This is a unique way of controlling ultrasonic waves using electromagnetic waves using thermally induced phase transition of the composite polymer that is included in the phononic structures. A brief summary of the recently awarded joint collaborative NSF-EFRI-GOALI project based on the collaboration between the Department of Physics and Department of Mechanical and Energy Engineering will be presented.
Dr. Arup Neogi is a Professor of Physics at the University of North Texas, USA. He is currently a Lady Davis Visiting Professor at Hebrew University, Jerusalem. He holds Adjunct Professor positions at University of Electronic Science and Technology, China and Shimane University, Japan. He is a fellow of the Japan Society for the Promotion and Sciences and had been a Senior Associate of National Research Council of National Academy of Sciences, USA. Dr. Neogi received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Yamagata University, Japan in the area of Quantum Effect Optoelectronic Devices in 1994. He was a New Energy Development Organization fellow at the Femtosecond Technology Research Association from 1995-1998. He was a Senior fellow of National Research Council of the United States from 2000-2002. He has served as the Chairman of the US-Japan Society of Promotion of Sciences, Washington DC. He is a fellow of Optical Society of America. He leads international collaboration on Nanophotonics with University of Aveiro, Portugal and University of Strathclyde, U.K. and on Acoustic Metamaterials with Polytechnique Institute in Valencia Spain, UAEM.
