College of Engineering

Thomas ScharfThomas Scharf, a professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, recently was elected Fellow of ASM International for significant contributions in materials tribology and surface engineering, pioneering work on solid lubricant materials and mechanisms, and distinguished service to the materials science community.

Elected by his peers, Scharf received the ASM International Fellow for his expertise and contributions to the field of tribology along with his years of mentorship and service to the society’s summer camps and local North Texas chapter. He also served as a division editor, helping to write and edit chapters, of ASM International’s handbook, “Friction, Lubrication, and Wear Technology.”

“Tom has been one of the foremost leaders in the study of tribology and has been a great educator and mentor for our undergraduate and graduate students,” said Nigel Shepherd, interim chair of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. “We are so fortunate to have Tom here at UNT.”

Scharf, who is also an elected Fellow of the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers, will be recognized by ASM International at its awards dinner Sept. 15 in Cleveland, Ohio.

“It is an honor to be recognized by my peers in becoming an ASM International Fellow.  I have been privileged to work with many great materials scientists and engineers during the last 30 years,” said Scharf.
