Department of Computer Science and Engineering Professor Saraju Mohanty recently received a Fulbright U.S. Specialist Award to collaborate on a project focused on security, communication and interoperability in areas where long-range communications with a lower power are needed for the Internet of Things (IoT).
Mohanty, an expert in smart electronic systems and smart cities, will focus on creating a cyber-physical system using artificial intelligence, data analytics and security at the Edge of IoT under the Fulbright Specialist Award. His expertise in Hardware-Assisted Security or Security by Design – including designing the first digital watermarking chip and the first low-power digital watermarking chip and integrating security features with the Secure Digital Camera – will serve as a foundation for this project.
“As we know, IoT is really the backbone of smart cities,” said Mohanty. “For this project, we want to look at how artificial intelligence, security and energy constraints come together in IoT.”
The award allows Mohanty the opportunity to visit India and work with the KL University as part of this collaboration. Mohanty’s Fulbright will provide funding that covers travel and living expenses in India; however, due to the worldwide pandemic, the program may not commence until 2021 or 2022.
The Fulbright Scholar Program was established in 1946 by Senator J. William Fulbright to increase the mutual understanding between the people of the U.S. and the people of other countries through international educational exchange programs. The Fulbright Program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
