The Association of Computing Machinery recently announced the new class of distinguished members for 2024. Among the 56 exemplary professionals the University of North Texas is represented not once but twice.

The College of Engineering’s Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Computer Science and Engineering Professor, Stephani Ludi is bestowed this honor for contributions to accessible computer science education research. Ludi’s research focuses on improving access to computer science for persons with visual impairments from early ages through adults.  Her work includes tool development, curriculum design, and providing undergraduates with the skills needed to develop accessible software in industry.  She is the Director of the DiscoverABILITY Lab, where she works with student researchers and colleagues in software engineering, human-computer interaction, and the application of AI and Natural Language Processing to accessibility.

Professor and Associate Chair of Computer Science and Engineering for Research, Song Fu is recognized for contributions in connected autonomous vehicles and edge computing. Fu’s deep learning research has applications in areas such as vehicle computing, privacy preserving AI, and additive manufacturing. As the Site Director of the NSF IUCRC Center for Electric, Connected and Autonomous Technologies for Mobility (eCAT), he leads researchers in mobility technology development involving connected autonomous vehicles, sensors, data analytics, and AI.

The ACM Distinguished Member program recognizes up to 10 percent of the worldwide ACM membership based on professional experience and significant achievements in computing beyond the norm. To be nominated, a candidate must have at least 15 years of professional experience in the field and five years of Professional ACM Membership in the last 10 years, and must have achieved a significant level of accomplishment or made a significant impact in the field. Also, a Distinguished Member is expected to have served as a mentor and role model to younger professionals.
