Jincheng Du, a professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, recently was elected Fellow of ASM International for significant contributions to the study of glasses, ceramics and other materials for functional and structural applications.

Elected by his peers, Du received the recognition for the development of computational materials and atomistic simulation methods for glasses, ceramics and other materials that deepened the understanding of their structure-property relations, and their corrosion and ion- transport behaviors.

Du is a longstanding expert in the fields of glass and ceramic materials, as well as in computer simulations of material behaviors. He’s published more than 180 peer-reviewed papers, 20 conference proceeding papers, two books and four book chapters within the materials science and engineering field. His research grants totaling nearly $5 million since joining UNT have been funded by industry and governmental agencies, including the Department of Energy, National Science Foundation and other agencies.

"Jincheng began his career as an assistant professor here at UNT, and we are extremely proud of his accomplishments and growth," said Nigel Shepherd, interim chair of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. "Jincheng is obviously an exceptional scientist, but he is also a great student mentor and outstanding citizen. He is UNT 'home grown,' and we are quite fortunate to have him here."

Du is also an elected Fellow of the American Ceramics Society. He is a recipient of the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award, the International Commission on Glass’s W.E.S. Turner Award and Corning’s 2021 Gordon S. Fulcher Distinguished Scholar Award.

"It is a great honor to be elected Fellow of the ASM International, a society that strives to provide scientific, engineering and technical knowledge and education to the materials community, with its missions being very close to what I hope to achieve in my career," said Du.
