Applicants must meet both university-wide and program-specific requirements for graduate
admission. Admission to the graduate programs is competitive; meeting minimum criteria
does not guarantee admission.
Admission Requirements
PhD in Mechanical and Energy Engineering
- GPA: Minimum 3.5 GPA in graduate coursework for applicants holding an MS degree; minimum
3.0 GPA for undergraduate coursework for applicants holding a BS degree. Students
without a background in mechanical or a closely related engineering major may be required
to complete undergraduate bridge (leveling) courses.
- English Language Proficiency (ELP): Required for international applicants as specified by UNT Admissions (e.g.,
TOEFL 79 out of 120; IELTS 6.0; PTE 53; DET 100).
- GRE: Not required (optional); however, GRE scores are strongly recommended for direct
BS-to-PhD applicants.

Applications are reviewed holistically based on GPA, academic and professional background,
letters of recommendation, statement of purpose, and alignment with faculty research.
MS in Mechanical and Energy Engineering
- GPA: Minimum 3.0 GPA in undergraduate coursework. Students without a background in
mechanical or a closely related engineering major may be required to complete undergraduate
bridge (leveling) courses.

MS in Engineering Management
- GPA: Minimum 3.0 GPA in undergraduate coursework. Students are required to have a
background in engineering/engineering technology, architecture, construction management,
or relevant STEM majors (e.g., Physics, Chemistry).
- English Language Proficiency (ELP): Required for international applicants as specified
by UNT Admissions (e.g., TOEFL 79 out of 120; IELTS 6.0; PTE 53; DET 100).
- GRE: Not required (optional); however, if applicants choose to include GRE scores
in their application, they will be considered as part of the review process.

Priority Dates
The Department of Mechanical Engineering follows the application priority dates established by the UNT Graduate Admissions.
Fall admission: To be considered for funding opportunities, submit all required application
materials by March 15.
Spring admission: To be considered for funding opportunities, submit all required
application materials by October 15.
Additional Notes
- Application submitted to UNT Graduate Admissions typically requires several weeks
for processing before being forwarded to the department for final review.
- International applicants: It is recommended to complete the application by the application
priority dates. Applicants should also coordinate with the International Office and the department regarding the required documents for enrollment.
- Applications for departmental teaching assistant (TA) and research assistant (RA)
positions may be submitted through the Scholarships & Aid website.
