Admission Requirements

The department uses holistic criteria for admissions. Your GRE, GPA, publications and research experience are all considered in the admission process. A high GPA, publication record and compatibility with existing research programs in the department are ways to stand out among applicants. 

Include any request for financial support in your cover letter. Department TA/RA position applications can be filed through the Scholarships & Aid website.

A statement of purpose, resume and 3 letters of recommendation are required as supplemental documents to your application.

General Guidelines

GRE: 155 or higher quantitative | 146 (150 for Ph.D.) or higher verbal

GPA: 3.0 undergraduate (for MS applicants or Ph.D. applicants with BS degree)

           3.5 previous university coursework (for Ph.D. applicants with MS degree)

English Language Proficiency (ELP): TOEFL - 4 out of 6 or 79 out of 120 | IELTS - 6.0

Admission Procedures

Students must meet minimum requirements for graduate admission to the university and the department requirements for the program.

Complete an online application to the university through GradCAS. Visit the Graduate Admissions office for additional information about the application process.

Priority Dates

The Department of Mechanical Engineering follows the application priority dates set by the UNT Graduate Admissions Office.

Fall applicants: We begin awarding assistantship funding on January 15 each year. To be considered for all funding opportunities, submit all required application materials by January 15.

Things to Note

  • The application to the UNT Admissions Office does not instantly go to the department once completed. Please allow up to two weeks for the department to receive.
  • International students: complete the application four months in advance of your desired semester start date. Ensure you are also in contact with the International Office and the department about the required documents necessary for enrollment.
  • Once the application is completed, the committee will meet and respond with a decision as soon as possible. Expediting is not guaranteed, but will be considered upon request with a compelling reason (outside of late application).
  • Staff and faculty cannot provide detailed updates regarding the application process; however, please reach out with inquiries or concerns to the faculty member you are interested in researching with, or MechanicalGraduate@unt.edu.
  • The department no longer takes email submissions for documents.
