Recent research on cold-formed steel shear walls at UNT

Abstract: 

The presentation presents recent research efforts aimed at finding an alternative non-combustible high-performance shear wall system that can be used in mid- and high-rise cold-formed steel (CFS) light-framed buildings. To achieve this goal, several innovative shear wall configuration with corrugated steel sheathing was proposed. The research involved testing and numerical analysis of mid- and high-rise building architypes using the proposed high performance shear wall system. The research showed that the proposed new shear walls demonstrated substantially higher shear capacity and adequate ductility against seismic loads. The invention was later implemented in developing the next generation shelter structures. A full-scale prototype was built to approve the concept and constructability.

Cheng Yu
Biography: 

Cheng Yu, Ph.D., P.E., Professor, is a faculty member of the Construction Engineering Technology program in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of North Texas. Dr, Yu earned his Ph.D. and Master degree of Civil Engineering from the Johns Hopkins University, and his bachelor degree of Civil Engineering from Tsinghua University in China. Dr. Yu' research has been focused on improving the performance and safety of cold-formed steel structures in construction. Some of his research findings have resulted in to new design provisions in the North American Specifications and Standards of cold-formed steel structures. Dr. Yu was the recipient of 2010 Faculty Early Career Development Award from the National Science Foundation.
