February 26 - 28 , 2021 | Hosted by UNT and UTSA BMES
The 2021 Medical Device Make-a-Thon is virtual this year!
Compete to win up to $600 for your team!
Similar to a Hack-a-Thon, the Make-a-Thon is a competition in which participants in teams of 4-5 members have 48 hours to design and digitally prototype a medical device that solves a given clinical or medical problem. The Make-a-Thon culminates in a final event where teams pitch their designs to a panel of judges to be scored. The top 3 teams will win these prizes:
First Place: $600
Second Place: $400
Third Place: $200
The Make-A-Thon is a great way to network and work alongside peers and community members in an innovative and entrepreneurial way. Check out the event’s website for rules and details.
Registration includes a T-shirt. Space is limited to the first 20 fully registered teams! Register here!
Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: Do we need a physical, working device by the end of the competition?
A: Nope. Team designs will be evaluated on their feasibility, but this is not senior design, so you only need to utilize your resources to convince the judges that your design is feasible. The closer you can get to a complete proof of concept during the competition, the better. To ensure fairness, only SolidWorks is allowed so the prototype will be entirely digital (no 3D printing, etc.)
Q: Who judges the designs?
A: Representatives from the Biomedical Industry. From R&D engineers at small companies around San Antonio and Denton, to the directors of the largest innovation competition in the city, diverse backgrounds and interests will be represented on our panel.
