Overview

The ABET-accredited Electrical Engineering Technology (ELET) program in the Department of Engineering Technology at the University of North Texas is one of only 10 programs in the nation to offer graduate and undergraduate degrees in electrical engineering technology. Housed in a 300-acre, sprawling new complex at UNT Discovery Park, there are many opportunities for students to work in state-of-the-art labs, complete real-world research and learn advanced skills with other motivated students.

Since the 1980s, microprocessors, microcontrollers and other digital technologies have made their way into virtually every conceivable engineered system in consumer electronics, instrumentation and home appliances. They are also used in advanced electronics applications in many fields, including biomedical, communications, energy, manufacturing, military and transportation.

Complete the BSET with a major in ELET degree plan and enter the exciting, challenging and constantly changing field of electronics and digital technology applications. This unique degree plan requires you to take a digital-technology-related course every semester as a backbone to advanced electives in embedded digital systems, power electronics, digital communications and digital control. You can be admitted to this degree plan if you have credit for or are currently enrolled in MATH 1650 Pre-Calculus. Because the world has gone digital, this degree will give you solid engineering career options in virtually every industry sector. Create further career opportunities with our master’s degree in engineering systems (MSES) and a concentration area of electrical systems.

Faculty

Our electrical engineering technology program has some of the most talented and experienced faculty in the nation. We pride ourselves on hiring and retaining the best educators, who not only prepare our students for their future careers through classroom instruction but also serve as student mentors and research advisors. Our accomplished faculty members:

  • Hold doctorates in engineering and have industry experience
  • Are active in research and scholarly activities
  • Get grants from federal, state and industrial sources
  • Have research interests in VLSI, fiber-optics, biomedical engineering and instrumentation
  • Encourage undergraduates to get research experience

Labs

Students have access to modern teaching laboratories equipped with computer stations running state-of the-art software, as well as instrumentation devices such as multi-meters, digital oscilloscopes, DAQ boards, logic analyzers, FPGA development boards, NI Elvis and Quanser control units.

Industrial Advisory Board

The electrical engineering faculty maintains good working relationships with several local industry leaders, including the following companies that are part of our industrial advisory board. The industrial advisory board provides guidance and necessary support to the department in assessment of the curriculum, both existing and proposed, and evaluation of student outcomes. It also provides the department with future trends and employment needs in industry.

Professional Societies

There are many opportunities for students to get involved and develop their professional skills. No matter what your background is, our program offers something for every student who wants to learn more about electrical engineering technology. We highly recommend that students get involved with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the Society of Women Engineers, the Society of Professional Hispanic Engineers and/or the National Society of Black Engineers to get the most of their educational pursuits.

ETAC/ABET Accreditation

The electrical engineering technology program is accredited by the Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission of ABET Inc. This accreditation means the program has passed strict academic standards for excellence in education.
