UNT Welcomes New Chair

Dr. Kuruvilla John

Department of Mechanical and Energy Engineering

After serving UNT’s College of Engineering as the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies for six years, Dr. Kuruvilla John is now the new Chair of the Department of Mechanical and Energy Engineering (MEE). MEE, established in 2007, is the home of more than 780 undergraduates and 100 graduate students. MEE is also the home of the ZERO Energy Lab, Texas’ only such facility testing technologies and systems for net-zero energy consumption of buildings.
Dr. Kuruvilla John earned his M.S. and Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Iowa and a Bachelor of technology in Chemical Engineering from Anna University in India.

His research interests are in the areas of environmental sustainability with a focus on air quality modeling, monitoring and management. He was responsible for securing more than 40 externally sponsored research contracts, grants and projects worth more than $15 million from various funding entities including the National Science Foundation, Department of Energy, Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, local governmental agencies, private foundations and industries. He has published 70 peer-reviewed papers. He has also mentored 56 M.S. students, 2 Ph.D. students and 13 research scientists.
