Dr. Shi obtained his Ph.D. degree at Michigan Technological University (MTU). After serving as a post-doctoral research associate at MTU and the University of Maine (UMaine), he joined APA – The Engineered Wood Association (a third party agency for building products certification), as an engineer. In 2004, he came back to academia, joining Mississippi State University (MSU) as an assistant professor. After seven years of service at MSU, Dr. Shi joined University of North Texas (UNT) in 2011.
Dr. Shi is the past president for the Society of Wood Science and Technology (SWST). He is also members of a few other professional societies, serving as chairs of different committees in the societies. Dr. Shi has published more than 160 journal papers and professional conference proceedings; served as reviewers for more than 30 professional journals, standard organizations and federal funding agencies. He has been invited to give seminars over 60 times internationally.
Dr. Shi is experienced in the processing and evaluation of composite materials, especially renewable composite bioproducts, including engineered wood-based products and natural fiber composites. His research interests also include renewable bioproducts manufacturing, nanocomposites, adhesive and adhesion, biofuel, and biomass to carbon conversion. He has been serving as PI or Co-PI for federal research projects funded by National Science Foundation, Department of Energy, U.S. Department of Agriculture, and industry sponsors.
