2017 Materials Camp

Apply for the 2017 Materials Summer Camp for DFW High School Students!

The department of Material Science & Engineering is excited to announce our 2017 Materials Summer Camp. The camp will introduce the field of material science and engineering to participants using selected modules with hands-on experiences and talks. The camp will provide an opportunity for participants to learn about material science and engineering and what it is like to be a engineering major! This camp is free. Lunch and a t-shirt will be provided to all selected applicants.

The UNT MTSE department has successfully organized three summer camps since the summer of 2010 with over 70 high school students from Texas and neighboring states. The camp will be one day long and is scheduled to take place on the 16th of June. Below are details regarding the general schedule as well as some brief details regarding the content of the modules.

For the 2017 Summer Camp, applicants must be:

  • Upcoming sophomores, juniors, and seniors in high school. (Class of 18, 19, 20)
  • Be able to obtain own transportation to event and after event.
  • Must show an interest in pursuing a higher education by attending a two year or four year education institute upon high school graduation.
  • Must show an interest in pursuing a major in engineering.

Module Details:

Laser Processing

The laser is one of the greatest innovations of the 20th century and its continued development has been an exciting chapter in the history of science, engineering, and technology. Lasers have become attractive tools and research instruments with potential for applications in an extraordinary variety of fields. In this module, we demonstrate how lasers are used in materials synthesis and processing. The main emphasis of this module is to improve the surface properties of material. Particularly in this regards we find lasers as a possible tool for surface engineering.

Polymer Materials

The term polymer is sometimes taken to refer to plastics, but it actually encompasses a large class of materials comprised both of natural and synthetic materials with a wide range of properties. In the polymer module, students will be introduced to different types of polymers and related ongoing research that can significantly improve our lives. By the end of this module students will be able to appreciate the role of polymeric materials in our day to day life and in high-tech applications.

Glass and Ceramics

The Glass and Ceramics module is a concise and interesting introduction to the world of glass and ceramics, including their definition, processing and applications. Both the similarities and differences between glass and ceramics are included in the module. How does a superconductor work? What are the advantages of ceramic knives compared to a traditional metal knife? How do you make glass in the lab and what can we do to make it stronger? All the answers will be found in the demonstration videos and hands-on experiments in this module.

Microscopy

Advanced materials require advanced imaging techniques to understand materials problems that we attempt to solve each day. Very high magnifications are possible with these advanced microscopes, allowing researches to see down to the smallest details- individual atoms. This module will focus on these machines and the applications they are used for, ranging from imaging to chemical analysis and everything in between.
